How to track your FIR's investigation status using CCTNS

Filed an FIR and heard nothing? Here's how to track its investigation status through CCTNS and the Digital Police Portal, and a follow-up right most people never use.

You filed an FIR weeks ago and now hear nothing. Is the police investigating? Has a charge sheet been filed? Has the case quietly gone cold? You are not powerless here. Every FIR in India is entered into CCTNS — the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems — a nationwide database that also powers citizen portals where you can pull your FIR copy and, in many states, track its status. Combined with your legal right to updates, you can keep a case moving.

This playbook shows you how to track an FIR's investigation status through CCTNS, the Digital Police Portal, and a follow-up right most people never use.

What the law and rules actually says

  • You are entitled to a free copy of the FIR. Under Section 173(2) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, the informant gets a copy free of cost. Many states also publish FIR copies online via CCTNS citizen portals (serious sexual offences and sensitive cases are, rightly, withheld).
  • CCTNS is the backbone. Under CCTNS, FIRs are digitised and linked nationally. The national Digital Police Portal (digitalpolice.gov.in) and most state police citizen portals let you view/download FIRs and, increasingly, see case status.
  • You have a right to be informed of progress. The complainant/victim is entitled to updates on the investigation, and where police decide to close a case, the informant must be notified and can protest that closure before the magistrate.
  • A stalled investigation has remedies. If the police don't act, you can approach the Superintendent of Police, and ultimately move the Magistrate under Section 175(3) BNSS to direct investigation.

Step-by-step playbook

  1. Get and keep your FIR details

    Have your FIR number, police station, district, and date ready. Download the FIR copy from your state police citizen portal or the Digital Police Portal, or collect the free copy the station must give you under Section 173(2) BNSS.

  2. Check status on the state CCTNS citizen portal

    Open your state police citizen services portal (search "[State] police citizen portal / CCTNS"). Look for "View FIR" or "FIR status" and enter the FIR number, police station, and year. Some states show whether it's under investigation or charge-sheeted.

  3. Ask the Investigating Officer directly

    Note the IO's name from the FIR. A polite written request for a status update (template below) creates a paper trail and often prompts action. Keep a copy with the receiving stamp or the postal/AD receipt.

  4. Escalate to the SP if there's no movement

    If weeks pass with no update, write to the Superintendent of Police of the district, attaching the FIR and your IO request. Ask for the investigation status and, if warranted, a change of IO.

  5. Approach the Magistrate if the police won't act

    If the police refuse to investigate or sit on it, you can move the jurisdictional Magistrate under Section 175(3) BNSS to direct investigation. This is the strongest lever and is best done with basic legal help — free legal aid is available through the District Legal Services Authority.

Where it usually breaks

  • The portal shows the FIR but no status. State CCTNS rollouts vary; not all expose live investigation status. Fall back to the written IO request in Step 3, which they must respond to.
  • "The case is under investigation" — indefinitely. Ask for specifics in writing: has a charge sheet been filed, and if not, why, and by when? Vague answers are easier to escalate than silence.
  • You're told the FIR "can't be shared online". For most offences it can; genuinely sensitive cases (e.g. sexual offences) are withheld by law — but you, as the informant, still get your Section 173(2) copy.
  • The station stonewalls. Don't argue at the counter. Escalate in writing to the SP, and keep every acknowledgement. For emergencies, 112 is the all-India response number.
